Frequently Asked Questions

Everything travellers ask us before a Morocco desert tour, from choosing a desert to packing for the camp night.

Desert tours

For a first taste, 2 days is enough: Zagora is around 7 hours by road from Marrakech, usually with a stop at Ait Benhaddou on the way. For the tall dunes of Merzouga (Erg Chebbi), plan at least 3 days, as the drive is closer to 9 or 10 hours.

Zagora is closer and perfect for a short trip. Merzouga offers the higher golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and a more remote Sahara feeling. Still unsure? Our guide to the best desert to visit in Morocco will help you decide.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm days and cool nights. Winter is sunny, but desert nights can drop close to freezing, and summer afternoons are very hot. More details in our guide to the best time to visit the Moroccan desert.

You ride into the dunes around sunset, dinner is a slow-cooked tagine, followed by Berber drums around the fire and a sky full of stars. You can choose a standard or a luxury camp. Read what it is really like to sleep in a Berber tent.
