3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour

3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour Through the Sahara

Three days, two nights, one great loop through the heart of Morocco. Leave the imperial city of Fes behind, ride a camel into the Sahara, walk deep gorges and watch the country change from green mountains to red kasbahs and golden dunes before you arrive in Marrakech over the High Atlas.

The 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour is led by local guides who know the road, the stories and the people. Along the way you meet the renowned Moroccan hospitality, taste the local cuisine at your stops and see how landscapes change from cedar forests to palm groves to dunes.

Think of it as a slow crossing of the country instead of a flight or a long bus ride. Each day has its own mood: the forests and monkeys of the Middle Atlas, the silence of the Sahara, then the gorges, kasbahs and passes of the south. It is the right tour for travellers who want to cross Morocco without stressful transfers, and who want the best of the journey in only three days.

3-Day Fes to Marrakech Itinerary

Think of this route as a story in three parts: forest and mountain, then desert, then gorges and kasbahs. The driving is long, but the scenery keeps changing from one hour to the next.

  1. Day 1: Fes, Middle Atlas and Merzouga

Leave Fes in the morning and climb into the Middle Atlas, where the road winds through fragrant cedar forests and monkeys sometimes wait at the roadside. The landscape then opens up and dries out as you continue via Midelt and the Ziz Valley, with its long palm oasis, towards the south.

In the late afternoon you arrive at the dunes of Merzouga for a sunset camel ride to your camp, with Erg Chebbi glowing orange around you. It is a big day, but the end of it is the reason you came.

    Overnight: desert camp

  2. Day 2: Merzouga, Tinghir and Dades

After breakfast at the camp, say goodbye to the dunes and drive west to the Tinghir oasis and its gorges, where tall rock walls close in around a green palm grove. It is a good place to stretch your legs and walk a little before the road continues.

From there you drive on towards the Dades Valley, a region of red cliffs, rock formations and small villages, where you stay the night.

    Overnight: Dades Valley

  3. Day 3: Dades, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech

Follow the road of a thousand kasbahs through the Skoura Oasis, passing old fortified houses of red earth among the palms. Then visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO village of clay towers climbing a hill above the river, which has served as a film set many times.

The last stretch crosses the High Atlas over the Tichka Pass, with views over Berber villages and rocky valleys, and ends in Marrakech in the evening.
