3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary
The route is long on distance and short on boredom. Each day mixes driving with stops, so you always have something to look forward to.
Day 1: Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou, the Rose Valley and Dades Gorge
We leave Marrakech at 8 am and climb towards Ouarzazate through the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest main road crossing in Morocco, with views over the High Atlas and its Berber villages.
Next stop is Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage fortress village that has appeared in films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. After your visit we follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the green Skoura Oasis, then continue to the Valley of the Roses at Kelaa M’Gouna, known for its fragrant roses.
The road passes the Tamnalt hills and their strange rock formations, and ends in the red and mauve cliffs of Dades Gorge, where you spend the night.
Day 2: Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge and the Erg Chebbi dunes
After breakfast we drive to Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise around 300 meters above the river and the canyon narrows to a few meters. Take a walk along the water before the long road to the desert.
In Merzouga you meet your camel guides at the foot of Erg Chebbi. Climb on board for a trek over the dunes at sunset, with the sand turning from gold to deep orange. Your camp is waiting at the end, with dinner served in a traditional nomad tent.
After dinner, sit around the camp, listen to Berber music and look up. Far from city lights, the Sahara sky is full of stars.
Day 3: Sunrise on the dunes, Rissani and back to Marrakech
Wake early for the sunrise over Erg Chebbi, the best light of the whole trip. After breakfast we leave Merzouga and stop in Rissani, an ancient city that marked the entry point of Arab dynasties into Morocco.
The return route crosses the Sarhro volcanic mountains, with panoramic views over the Draa Valley, then climbs back over the High Atlas. You reach Marrakech in the evening.

Is 3 days enough to see the Sahara from Marrakech?
Yes. Three days is the classic length for Merzouga. You see the High Atlas, Ait Benhaddou, the gorges and the Erg Chebbi dunes, with a full evening and a night in the desert. If you want a slower pace, we can add a fourth day.
How long does the camel ride last?
The sunset trek takes you from the edge of the dunes to your camp, at an easy pace with stops for photos. Your guide confirms the exact timing on the day.
Where do we sleep during the tour?
The first night is in Dades Gorge and the second night is in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi. Tell us your comfort preferences and we confirm the options available for your dates.
What is the best time of year for a Sahara tour?
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. July and August are very hot, and winter nights in the desert can be cold.
Can I start or finish in another city?
