2-Day Zagora Desert Tour From Marrakech

2-Day Zagora Desert Tour From Marrakech: Camels, Kasbahs and a Night Under the Stars

Swap the buzz of Marrakech for a night under a blanket of stars. In just two days you cross the High Atlas over the Tichka Pass, walk through a UNESCO kasbah, roll into the Draa Valley and ride a camel at golden hour to a desert bivouac in the sands of Zagora.

This 2-day Zagora desert tour from Marrakech is the perfect short escape for travellers who want a real taste of the Sahara without a long journey. In two days you see snow-capped mountain passes, mud-brick kasbahs, palm groves and dunes, with a dinner by the fire, Berber rhythms in the night and a desert sunrise you will not forget.

A professional driver takes care of the long roads in an air-conditioned vehicle, so all you have to do is watch the scenery change from alpine to oasis to open desert. We plan the stops so that the driving never feels like a chore: every few hours there is a viewpoint, a kasbah, a lunch break or a palm grove to stretch your legs in. If you only have a weekend and dream of sleeping in the Sahara, this is the tour built for you.

2-Day Marrakech to Zagora Itinerary

Two days, one night in the desert and plenty of stops along the way. Day 1 is the big adventure with the camel ride and the camp, and day 2 brings you back to Marrakech with fresh memories.

  1. Day 1: Marrakech, Tichka Pass, Ait Ben Haddou and Zagora

We pick you up at 8 am from your hotel or riad and head south towards the High Atlas. The road climbs in long, sweeping bends to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, where the view over folded mountains and scattered Berber villages is worth every photo stop.

Next comes the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage fortified village of clay and stone that has served as a film location for many productions. You have time to climb its lanes and gates at your own pace, then we continue to Ouarzazate for lunch before the road follows the palm-filled Draa Valley towards Zagora.

At the edge of the dunes you climb on a camel for a ride of about 1.5 hours to your bivouac, timed so that you arrive in time to admire the sunset. Dinner is served at the camp, with Berber rhythms in the night, and then you sleep under a clear, starry sky far from any city light.

    Overnight: desert bivouac, Zagora

  2. Day 2: Zagora, Agdz, Ouarzazate and back to Marrakech

Wake up early to watch the sunrise colour the dunes gold and pink, then enjoy breakfast at the camp before saying goodbye to the desert. It is the quietest, most photogenic hour of the whole trip, so keep your camera close.

We leave Zagora and drive to Ouarzazate through the Agdz region, a green strip of oasis along the river. If time allows, you can visit the film studios and the kasbah, then enjoy lunch on site before we cross the Tichka Pass again and return to Marrakech, with scenic stops on the way. You are back at your accommodation around 7 pm.

Arrival in Marrakech around 7 pm

Why Book This Tour With Visit the Desert

The Sahara in two days

Short on time? This is the easiest way to sleep in the desert and still be back in Marrakech on day 2, without a long holiday or complicated bookings.

Real desert, not a detour

You ride into the dunes by camel and spend the night in a bivouac, not in a hotel on the main road. That is the difference between seeing the desert and feeling it.

Easy to extend

Want more time in the dunes? We can turn this tour into a 3-day Merzouga trip or a custom route with extra nights, gorges and a longer camel ride.

Good to Know Before You Go

Pace

Day 1 is a long driving day, with the camel ride at the end. Day 2 is mostly the return drive, so expect to spend several hours in the vehicle each day and bring music, a book or simply your camera.

What to pack

A small overnight bag, closed shoes, a scarf for sun and sand, sunscreen, a charged phone or power bank and a warm layer for the evening. Leave large suitcases at your hotel in Marrakech.

Best season

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer days are very hot, and winter nights in the desert can be cold, so pack a proper warm layer.

Camp comfort

Camps near Zagora range from simple to more comfortable. Tell us your preference and we confirm the options for your dates.

Signal and showers

Mobile signal can be weak in the dunes, and facilities at a desert camp are simpler than at a hotel. Think of it as a short digital detox.

Want more time?

2-Day Zagora Desert Tour: Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 days enough to see the Sahara from Marrakech?

Yes, for a first taste. You reach the dunes of Zagora, ride a camel at sunset and sleep in the desert, and you are back in Marrakech on day 2. For longer desert time and the biggest dunes, choose our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

How long is the camel ride?

The camel ride to the bivouac takes about 1.5 hours, at an easy walking pace with time for photos. It is timed so that you arrive for the sunset, and no previous experience is needed.

Where do we sleep?

In a desert bivouac near Zagora, in the sand away from the road. Tell us your comfort preferences when you book and we confirm what is available for your dates.

What time do we leave and return?

We pick you up at around 8 am on day 1 and arrive back in Marrakech at around 7 pm on day 2. Pick-up is at your hotel or riad, and for riads deep in the medina we agree on a nearby meeting point.

What is the difference between Zagora and Merzouga?

Zagora is closer to Marrakech, so the trip fits in two days. Merzouga has the tallest dunes of Erg Chebbi but sits much further away, so it needs at least three days.

Are meals included?

Dinner and breakfast at the camp are included in the tour. Lunches and drinks are paid separately, and we stop at restaurants on the road so you can choose what you like.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes, closed shoes, sunscreen, a hat or scarf and a warm layer for the night. A small overnight bag is easier than a big suitcase, and a head torch is handy at the camp.

Can I change the route or the dates?

Yes. We adapt the tour to your plans, from the departure date to the pace of the trip or the type of camp. Send us a message with your ideas and we confirm what is possible.
