Marrakech to Merzouga 3 Day Tour: The Original Sahara Journey

Marrakech to Merzouga in 3 Days: The Original Way to Meet the Sahara

Some journeys are famous for a reason. This is the original Sahara route: over the High Atlas, down the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, through two dramatic gorges and out onto the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, where a night in a Berber camp is waiting for you.

If you have never slept in the desert, this Marrakech to Merzouga 3 day tour is the gentlest and most rewarding way to begin. In three days and two nights you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, walk through the UNESCO fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, follow the rose fields of Kelaa M’Gouna and stand beneath cliffs that rise up to 300 m in the Todra Gorge. Then comes the moment everyone remembers: a camel trek across the dunes at sunset and dinner under a sky full of stars.

We designed the pace for first-time desert travellers. You travel in a comfortable vehicle with a professional driver, every long drive is broken by a real stop, and each evening ends somewhere worth the journey. You do not need to be an adventurer or an athlete, only curious. We take care of the route, the timing and the details, so you can simply look out of the window and enjoy it.

Marrakech to Merzouga 3 Day Itinerary

Three days, one loop and no wasted kilometres. Here is how the original route unfolds, from the first mountain pass to the last dune.

  1. Day 1: Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of the Roses and Dades Gorge

We pick you up in Marrakech at 08:00 and head into the High Atlas, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the highest road in Morocco. The views over the mountains and the Berber villages clinging to the slopes make the first stop for photos an easy decision.

On the far side we reach Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified city that has appeared in so many films. We then follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Skoura Oasis and the fragrant Valley of the Roses at Kelaa M’Gouna, before the striking rock formations of the Tamnalt hills lead us to the Dades Gorge, where you have dinner and spend the night.

    Overnight: Dades Gorge

  2. Day 2: Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge and your night in the Erg Chebbi dunes

After breakfast we drive to the Todra Gorge, a high-altitude oasis framed by ochre cliffs that rise up to 300 metres. It is a perfect place to stretch your legs and feel how small a person is beside a canyon like this.

We then continue towards Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, where your camels and guides are waiting at the edge of the dunes. You ride across Erg Chebbi in time for a breathtaking sunset, then settle into the camp for dinner and a night under the stars in a traditional nomad tent.

    Overnight: desert camp, Erg Chebbi

  3. Day 3: Desert sunrise, Rissani, the Draa Valley and back to Marrakech

Rise early for the sunrise over the dunes, the quietest and most beautiful hour of the whole trip, and enjoy breakfast in the camp. Then we travel to Rissani, the ancient gateway of the dynasties that ruled Morocco, a lively town with a long story.

The road home crosses the Saghro volcanic range, with panoramic views over the Draa Valley. We cross the High Atlas once more and bring you back to Marrakech in the evening, tired in the best possible way.

Good to Know Before You Go

Early start, long roads

We leave Marrakech at 08:00, and distances are big. Expect several hours on the road each day with regular stops, so bring water, snacks and something to read or listen to.

Pack light for the camp

Take a small overnight bag for the desert and leave the rest in the vehicle. Add a warm layer for the evening, closed shoes for the sand, and a scarf or hat for sun and wind.

Camp comfort

Camps in Erg Chebbi vary from simple tents to more comfortable options. Tell us what matters to you when you book, and we confirm the choices available for your dates.

Best season

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer days in the desert are very hot, and winter nights can be cold, so dress in layers.

No special fitness needed

A camel ride is easy to learn, and you can walk the dunes at your own pace or simply sit and watch the light change.

Marrakech to Merzouga 3 Day Tour: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Marrakech to Merzouga 3 day tour a good choice for first-time travellers?

Yes, it is the route we recommend most to people who have never been to the desert. The days are balanced between scenery, short visits and rest, and you reach the dunes on day 2 with time for the sunset and a full night in camp.

What time do we leave Marrakech, and when do we come back?

We depart from Marrakech at 08:00 on day 1. On day 3 you wake up for the sunrise over the dunes and we drive back through Rissani and the Draa Valley, arriving in Marrakech in the evening.

How high is the Tizi n’Tichka pass, and is the road safe?

The Tizi n’Tichka pass reaches 2,260 m and is the highest road in Morocco. It is a well-used main road with bends and long climbs, and your professional driver knows it well. If you tend to feel carsick, tell us and we suggest the best seat.

Where do we sleep and what do we eat in the evening?

The first night is in the Dades Gorge, where you have dinner at your accommodation. The second night is in a traditional nomad tent in Erg Chebbi, with dinner served in camp after your camel trek. Tell us about any dietary needs when you book.

Can I add a day or change the route?

Yes. Many travellers add a night to slow the pace or ask for another end point. If a shorter break suits you better, look at our 2-day Zagora desert tour, or message us and we build a custom plan.

What should I bring for the desert night?

Pack light clothes for the day, a warm layer for the evening, closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for sun and sand. A small overnight bag is enough for the camp, and the rest of your luggage stays in the vehicle.

What is the best time of year for the Sahara?

March to May and September to November offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot in Merzouga, while winter days are pleasant but the nights are cold, so we advise warm clothes if you travel between December and February.

How is this different from your other Sahara tours?

This is the original three-day loop from Marrakech to Merzouga, with the key stops done well. If you prefer a private departure, see our private Merzouga desert tour, or ask us about the dunes of Erg Chigaga.
