Your Day Between Fes, Meknes and Volubilis

Three very different places in one day. We keep the schedule flexible, so you can linger where you like and still be back in Fes in the late afternoon.

  1. Departure from Fes and the vineyard road

Around 8 am, your driver picks you up from your accommodation in Fes. We can adjust the time to suit you, so tell us if you prefer a later start or want to be at Volubilis in the best light.

The road to Meknes takes about an hour and passes expansive vineyards, in a region known for high-quality wine, much of it exported to France. It is a gentle, green start to the day, with farmland and rolling hills instead of city streets.

    Around 8 am

  2. Meknes: about 3 hours in the imperial city

Meknes was the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who reigned from 1672 to 1727 and filled the city with monumental gates, walls and royal buildings. Visit his mausoleum, the royal stables, the medina square and the El-Hedim palace area, and get a feel for the scale of his ambition.

You have about three hours in total, which leaves time to stroll through the souk. Unlike the souk in Fes, the Meknes souk offers a more tranquil shopping experience, so you can look and ask prices without being rushed.

    Morning

  3. Lunch in Meknes

Stop for lunch in Meknes at a restaurant of your choice. Moroccan classics such as tagine, couscous and grilled brochettes are easy to find, along with lighter salads and vegetarian dishes.

Lunch is paid directly at the restaurant, and your driver can suggest a few places close to where you finish your visit so that you do not lose time before the afternoon.

    Lunch at your own cost

  4. Moulay Idriss and its pilgrimage streets

After lunch, drive to Moulay Idriss, known for its hillside setting and its importance as a pilgrimage site for Muslims. The town is named after Idriss I, the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty, and it climbs the slopes in a tight cluster of white and green buildings.

Its narrow, picturesque streets offer views of the surrounding valleys and of the nearby Roman site of Volubilis. It is a fine place for photos and a short walk, with the feeling of a real Moroccan town rather than a tourist stop.

    Afternoon

  5. Volubilis, the Roman city

Continue to Volubilis, the largest and best-preserved Roman site in the region, known for its mosaic floors and panoramic views. Walk among the remains of houses, public buildings and paved streets that once belonged to a prosperous provincial town of the Roman Empire.

The visit is short but rewarding, and you can capture plenty of photos along the way. You can explore the site on your own or with a guide, and the guide at Volubilis is optional and not included in the tour.

    Short visit

  6. Return to Fes

We aim to leave Volubilis around 4 or 5 pm and drive you back to Fes, arriving in the late afternoon. On the way, the light over the fields and vineyards is at its softest, perfect for a last look out of the window.

Your driver drops you at your accommodation in Fes, with time to rest before dinner and a day full of stories to share.
