How much does a desert tour in Morocco cost? Most trips of two to three days run between roughly 90 and 450 euros per person, and the gap comes down to two things: how many people share the vehicle and what kind of camp you sleep in. Everything else is detail. This guide shows you where your money goes, what is usually left out of the price, and how to compare quotes without getting burned.

The Short Answer: What You Can Expect to Pay
Published 2026 benchmarks from Moroccan operators put a shared 3-day group tour from Marrakech to Merzouga at about 90 to 150 euros per person. A comfortable private tour with a night in a luxury tented camp typically lands between 250 and 450 euros per person. Operators themselves describe the spread as almost entirely vehicle size and camp quality.
- Budget group tour: about 90 to 150 euros per person, shared minibus, basic bivouac, fixed schedule.
- Private tour, standard camp: mid-range, your own vehicle and driver, flexible stops.
- Private tour, luxury camp: about 250 to 450 euros per person, private bathroom tent, better food, more space.
Treat these as benchmarks, not a price list. Prices change with season, group size and fuel, so always ask for a written quote that lists exactly what is included.
What Actually Drives the Price
1. Private or shared transport
A shared minibus splits fuel, driver and vehicle across 8 to 16 guests, so the per-person price falls fast. The trade-off is a fixed timetable and stops chosen for the group. On a private tour you travel in your own vehicle with a local driver or guide, you set the pace, and you can linger at Ait Benhaddou or skip a stop you do not care about. For couples, families and small groups, the private price per head is often closer to a group tour than people expect.
2. The camp you sleep in
This is the biggest swing factor. A basic bivouac usually means shared bathrooms and simple beds. A luxury tented camp offers private bathrooms, proper beds and a quieter setting deeper in the dunes. Ask directly: “Is the bathroom private? How far is the camp from the nearest village?” If you want to know what the night itself is like, read our honest account of sleeping in a Berber tent.
3. Trip length and route
Marrakech to Merzouga is a serious drive. On our own routes, the stretch from Marrakech to Ouarzazate takes about four and a half hours and the road on to Erg Chebbi another six. Not sure how many days you need? See how many days to tour Morocco. A 2-day Zagora trip is far shorter than a 3-day Merzouga trip and usually cheaper, because you drive less and use less fuel. If budget is tight, compare the 2-day Zagora excursion from Marrakech with a longer route before deciding.
4. Season
Peak months are spring and autumn, plus Christmas and New Year, when camps fill up and prices rise. Summer is the cheapest because the desert is brutally hot. Our guide to the best time to visit the Moroccan desert explains the trade-off between price and comfort month by month.
5. Group size
A private vehicle costs roughly the same whether two or five people ride in it. That is why a family of four often gets much better value from a private tour than a couple does.
What Is Usually Included, and What Is Not
A transparent quote spells this out. For reference, here is what our private Merzouga desert tour of 3 days lists as included: air-conditioned round-trip transport with a professional driver, Wi-Fi on board, a riad stay, a night in a desert bivouac, and dinner and breakfast.
Typically not included, on our tours and on most others:
- Monument entrance fees
- Lunches and drinks
- Personal expenses and souvenirs
- Travel insurance and flights
- Tips for your driver, guide and camp staff (see our tipping guide for Morocco)
Set aside a daily cash buffer for lunches, drinks and tips. Meals at roadside cafes are cheap, but tourist restaurants on the Tichka route cost noticeably more.
What About a Camel Ride on Its Own?
If you ask “how much is a camel tour in Morocco,” the honest answer is that on an overnight desert trip it is normally included in the package: you ride into the dunes at sunset and often out again at sunrise. A standalone ride, for example from Agafay or a day visit to the dunes, is priced separately and varies by length and location. Always ask whether the camel trek, the camp dinner and the sunrise return are in the quote.
7 Questions to Ask Before You Pay
- Is the tour private or shared, and how many seats are in the vehicle?
- What type of camp is it, and is the bathroom private?
- Which meals are included, and which are not?
- Is the camel trek included, and for how long?
- Are there extra fees for entrances, parking or fuel on longer routes?
- What is the deposit, and what is the cancellation policy in writing?
- Who is my driver or guide, and which languages do they speak?
Our guides speak English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic and Berber, and every quote lists what is covered. Payment and cancellation terms are in your quote and in our terms and conditions.
Is the Cheapest Tour Worth It?
Sometimes. If you are a confident traveler on a tight budget and you accept a shared minibus and a basic camp, a group tour gets you to the dunes. But be wary of prices far below the market: they are usually made up by crowded vehicles, rushed schedules, stops at commission shops, or a camp that sits right beside a village rather than in the dunes. FAQ
How much is a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga?
Published 2026 operator benchmarks run from about 90 to 150 euros per person for a shared group tour and about 250 to 450 euros per person for a private tour with a luxury camp night. Your exact price depends on season, group size and camp type.
Is a private desert tour in Morocco worth the extra money?
For most couples, families and small groups, yes. You control the pace, travel in a vehicle meant for your group only, and usually sleep in a better camp. The per-person premium shrinks as the group grows.
Is Morocco expensive for tourists?
Morocco is good value compared with most of Europe, especially for food and local transport. The big costs are private transport, quality accommodation and guided experiences, which is where a clear quote protects your budget.
Are tips included in the tour price?
No. On our tours, tips for drivers, guides and camp staff are not included, so plan for them in cash.
Can I get a custom quote?
Yes. Tell us your dates, group size and comfort level through our tailor-made tours page and we will price a route around you.
