9-Day Sahara to Chefchaouen Tour From Marrakech

9-Day Sahara to Chefchaouen Tour From Marrakech

From the golden dunes of the Sahara to the blue lanes of Chefchaouen. Over nine days you cross the High Atlas, spend two nights in Merzouga, meet nomadic families, explore the medina of Fes and finish in the Blue City before returning to Marrakech.

The 9-day Sahara to Chefchaouen tour is the most complete mix of desert, culture and mountain scenery we offer in a loop from Marrakech. You start with the kasbahs and gorges of the south, then spend two nights in the Merzouga dunes, with a sunset camel trek, a day by 4×4 with nomadic families and Gnawa music in Khamlia. After that you travel north to Fes, Volubilis and Meknes, and reach the blue medina of Chefchaouen in the Rif mountains.

The pace is deliberately balanced. Long drives are followed by a full guided day in Fes and a free day in Chefchaouen, so you have time to rest, shop and wander. A professional driver takes you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the whole tour can be customized, including a start from Casablanca if you prefer.

9-Day Sahara to Chefchaouen Itinerary

This is our standard plan. It combines long scenic drives with three slower days: Merzouga, Fes and Chefchaouen.

  1. Day 1: Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley

We pick you up from your riad or hotel at 8 am and head for the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), with panoramic stops above Berber villages. The road climbs through hairpin bends and drops into the dry, red landscapes of the south.

Visit the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the backdrop of many international films. After lunch, continue to Ouarzazate and on to the Dades Valley, where you spend the night close to the red cliffs.

    Overnight: Dades Valley

  2. Day 2: Dades Valley, Todra Gorges and Erg Chebbi

After breakfast facing the Dades Gorges, drive to the Todra Gorges, canyons with walls up to 300 metres, ideal for a walk along the river. The cool, narrow corridor is a welcome pause before the long road east.

Continue through Tinghir and the palm groves of the Ziz Valley towards Erfoud and Rissani, the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty. In Merzouga, at the foot of Erg Chebbi, your camel caravan awaits for a trek into the Sahara, a magical sunset and a traditional dinner with drum music in your Berber camp.

    Overnight: Berber camp

  3. Day 3: Merzouga, nomads and Khamlia

Wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes, one of the most beautiful moments of the trip. After breakfast, spend the day exploring the Merzouga region by 4×4, with time to visit nomadic families living in caves and tents, share a mint tea and discover their ancestral way of life.

Stop at the village of Khamlia, famous for its Gnawa music, and see the old lead mines and the seasonal lake of Dayet Srij, which attracts flamingos in spring. You sleep at a hotel or luxury camp in Merzouga.

Overnight: hotel or luxury camp, Merzouga

  4. Day 4: Merzouga to Fes

Today we head north across the Ziz Valley and its endless palm groves, with a stop in Midelt, a mountain town between the High and Middle Atlas. The landscape turns from red desert to pine and cedar forests.

We continue through Azrou and Ifrane, the alpine style town of the Middle Atlas often called the Switzerland of Morocco, before reaching Fes. Count about eight hours on the road with stops, covering roughly 450 km.

    Overnight: Fes

  5. Day 5: Guided tour of Fes

A full day with a local guide in Fes, the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. You see the Royal Palace gates, the Jewish quarter (Mellah), Al Quaraouiyine University, one of the oldest in the world, and the Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas, with their carved cedar and zellige tiles.

The tour continues to the Chouara tanneries and the maze-like souks of Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You finish with a panoramic view over the whole medina from the Marinid Tombs.

    Overnight: riad in Fes

  6. Day 6: Fes, Volubilis, Meknes and Chefchaouen

After breakfast, visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the best-preserved archaeological site in Morocco, famous for its mosaics. Then drive through the imperial city of Meknes, known for the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the Heri es-Souani granaries.

In the afternoon we drive through the Rif Mountains to reach Chefchaouen, the famous blue city. The journey covers roughly 300 km, and the town appears among green hills with its blue and white houses.

    Overnight: Chefchaouen

  7. Day 7: Free day in Chefchaouen

Enjoy a full day at your own pace in the most photogenic city in Morocco. Wander through the blue medina, visit the Kasbah museum and Outa el-Hammam square, and shop for local handicrafts such as woven blankets, goat cheese and natural pigments.

For a sunset, hike up to the Spanish Mosque for a view over the blue city. Nature lovers can also arrange an optional excursion to the Akchour waterfalls in the Talassemtane National Park.

    Overnight: Chefchaouen

  8. Day 8: Chefchaouen, Rabat and Casablanca

We leave the Rif Mountains and head towards the Atlantic coast. In Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom, we visit the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas overlooking the ocean.

We then continue to Casablanca for a panoramic city tour including the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world, built partly over the sea. The drive from Chefchaouen to Casablanca is about 330 km.

    Overnight: Casablanca

  9. Day 9: Casablanca to Marrakech

After breakfast, we return to Marrakech in about two and a half hours, covering roughly 240 km by motorway. The road crosses open plains and farmland, a quiet end to a journey of mountains, dunes and blue lanes.

We can stop along the way or drop you directly at your hotel or at Marrakech Menara Airport, so tell us your flight time and we plan around it.
