Private Merzouga Desert Tour From Marrakech: 3 Days With Your Own Driver

Travel to the Sahara at your own pace. This private 3-day tour takes you from Marrakech to the dunes of Merzouga in your own vehicle, with a driver who adapts the stops, the pauses and the photo breaks to your group, and a night in a desert camp at the foot of Erg Chebbi.

During this private Merzouga desert tour, your driver picks you up at your hotel in Marrakech and heads into the Atlas Mountains over the Tichka Pass (2,260 m), one of the most impressive mountain landscapes in the Atlas range. You stop at the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage fortress and one of the most spectacular sites of southern Morocco.

Wifi is available on board, and the pace is yours: more time in a gorge, a longer lunch, an extra photo stop. Only your group travels in the vehicle, so couples, families and friends can share the experience in privacy. From the palm groves of Skoura to the gorges of Todra and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, every day is built around real places and real time to enjoy them.

3-Day Private Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary

This is our classic southern route, run privately. We can change the order of stops or add time wherever you like, so tell us what matters most to you.

  1. Day 1: Marrakech to the Dades Valley

We leave your Marrakech hotel and climb the Tichka Pass at 2,260 m, with stops for photos over the Atlas peaks and Berber villages. The road winds through bare red mountains and green river valleys, and your driver stops wherever the view deserves it.

Next comes Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village of clay-built kasbahs and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can walk through the old lanes and climb to the top for a view over the valley and the river. After lunch (paid directly, not included), we continue through Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south.

The Skoura Oasis is the last big stop, where the Kasbah Amridil stands among palm groves, a good place for a short walk and a look at the traditional earthen architecture of the region. You arrive in the Dades Valley for the night, with dinner and breakfast included.

    Overnight: Dades Valley

  2. Day 2: Dades, Todra Gorge and the Sahara

After breakfast, drive to the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls rise to 300 m. It is a favorite of climbers and walkers, and a stretch on foot along the river is one of the best ways to feel the scale of the rock.

Then continue through the palm groves of the Ziz Valley and Erfoud to Merzouga, with the landscape slowly turning from green oases to open stone desert and, finally, the golden dunes. At the foot of Erg Chebbi, your camels are waiting.

Ride towards the camp across the sand for sunset, when the dunes turn from gold to deep orange and the silence of the desert settles around you. At camp you have dinner and a night under the stars, far from city lights, which is the moment most travellers remember for years.

    Overnight: desert camp, Erg Chebbi

  3. Day 3: Sunrise and return to Marrakech

Catch the sunrise over the dunes, the best light of the whole trip, then have breakfast and say goodbye to the camp. It is worth walking up a dune before leaving, to feel the soft sand and take photos of the first light.

The drive back stops at Rissani, an old market town on the edge of the desert, known for its traditional souk and its role in the history of southern Morocco. It is a good place to stroll, shop and have lunch, paid directly.

The route then crosses the Draa Valley, with its long ribbon of palm groves and old kasbahs, before the road climbs over the High Atlas to Marrakech. You arrive in the evening, and your driver drops you at your hotel, tired from the road and full of images of dunes and mountains.

Private Merzouga Desert Tour: Frequently Asked Questions

What does private tour mean?

Only your group travels in the vehicle, with your own driver. You decide the pace and the stops within the route, and nobody else shares your seats.

How long is the camel ride into the dunes?

The camel trek takes you from the edge of the dunes to your camp at sunset, over the sand of Erg Chebbi. Your guide confirms the exact timing and length on the day.

Where do we sleep on this tour?

The first night is in the Dades Valley and the second is in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi. Dinner and breakfast are included on both nights, while lunches and drinks are paid separately.

Is the drive tiring, and is it suitable for children?

Days 1 and 3 are long drives with many hours on the road, but the stops at Ait Benhaddou, Rissani and the valleys break them up. Children who are used to car travel usually do well, and we can slow the pace for families.

Is wifi really available?

Wifi is available on board the vehicle, which is useful on the long stretches. Coverage in remote areas of the mountains and the desert can vary.

Can I upgrade the camp or change the route?

Yes. Tell us your preference for a more comfortable camp, an extra night or a different order of stops, and we confirm the options for your dates. For a similar classic route, see our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech.

What is the best time of year for the Sahara?

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer is very hot, and winter nights in the desert can be cold.

Can I start outside Marrakech?

Yes, on request. We can organize other starting points, so tell us where you are staying and we advise on the best way to plan the tour.
