How many days do you need to tour Morocco? Plan 3 days for the desert alone, 10 days for the classic imperial cities and Sahara circuit, and 12 days if you want to add Chefchaouen and the coast without rushing. Morocco is bigger than most visitors expect, and the biggest mistake is cramming too much into too little time. This guide shows what each trip length really delivers.

The Short Answer

The right length depends on your priorities. Use this table as a starting point.

DaysWhat you can realistically seeBest for
1 to 2One city or one excursion, such as the Ait Benhaddou or Essaouira day tripsAdd-on to a city break
3Marrakech to the Sahara and backFirst desert experience
5 to 7Desert plus one or two citiesTime-poor travelers
10Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the desert and MarrakechThe classic first trip
12The same circuit at a gentler pace, with a free day and two nights in key placesComfort and photography

Why not shorter? Distances and mountain roads. On our routes, Marrakech to Ouarzazate is about four and a half hours of driving, and the road on to Erg Chebbi another six, so 3 days is the practical minimum for the big dunes.

3 Days: The Sahara and Back

If you only want the desert, three days is enough. A classic loop leaves Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass, stops at Ait Benhaddou, continues to Dades or Todra and reaches Merzouga for a sunset camel trek and a night in a camp. The next day you watch sunrise and head back. See our private Merzouga desert tour of 3 days and the 3-day Original Sahara tour for route options.

With only two days, choose Zagora. The 2-day Zagora tour from Marrakech picks you up at 8:00, crosses the Atlas, visits Ait Benhaddou and ends with a camel ride to camp. Not sure which desert fits? See what is the best desert to visit in Morocco.

Fes el Bali needs at least a full day with a guide.

5 to 7 Days: Desert Plus Culture

With a week you can combine the Sahara with one or two cities. Typical combinations include Marrakech, the desert and Fes via the Middle Atlas, or Marrakech, Essaouira and the desert. Our 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour is a compact way to connect the imperial city of Fes with the Sahara and Marrakech. If you prefer the coast, try the Atlantic Coast desert tour.

10 Days: The Classic Morocco Circuit

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip. Our 10-day Classic Morocco tour runs from Casablanca to Casablanca and covers:

  • Day 1: Casablanca airport pickup, Hassan II Mosque, drive to Rabat
  • Day 2: Rabat, then Chefchaouen
  • Day 3: Volubilis, Meknes and Fes
  • Day 4: Fes medina with a local guide
  • Day 5: Fes to Merzouga via the Middle Atlas, with a sunset camel ride and a night in an Erg Chebbi camp
  • Day 6: Sunrise, Todra Gorge and Dades Gorge
  • Day 7: Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate on the way to Marrakech
  • Day 8: Marrakech medina and Jemaa el-Fna
  • Day 9: Essaouira day trip
  • Day 10: Transfer to Casablanca airport

The route includes an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, riads and hotels, a local guide for the Fes medina and one night in a nomad camp. Monument fees, lunches, drinks and tips are extra.

12 Days: The Grand Tour Without the Rush

If you want a more relaxed pace, the 12-day Morocco Grand Tour runs from Marrakech to Casablanca with two nights in Marrakech, a night in Ouarzazate, two nights in the Erg Chebbi camp, two in Fes, two in Chefchaouen and two in Casablanca. That extra time gives you a free day to start, a morning at the dunes after sunrise, and a full day in Chefchaouen. It includes an English-speaking driver guide for the whole trip, with French, German, Italian and Spanish on request, licensed local guides in key cities and a sunset camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes.

What to Consider Before You Decide

  1. Driving time. Morocco rewards slow travel. Ideally keep most days to around 5 or 6 hours of driving.
  2. Season. Summer in the south is very hot. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. See the best time to visit the Moroccan desert.
  3. Budget. More days mean more nights and meals. Our price guide explains what drives the cost.
  4. Your pace. If you hate long drives, choose a shorter route or split the trip between regions. Read is a desert tour in Morocco worth it for an honest view.
  5. Arrival and departure cities. We can pick you up in Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes or Agadir.

FAQ

How many days do you need to tour Morocco?

For a first trip that includes the imperial cities and the Sahara, 10 days is ideal. If you only want the desert, 3 days is enough. For a slower pace with Chefchaouen and the coast, choose 12 days.

Can you see Morocco in a week?

You can see a good slice: a few days in Marrakech plus a 2 or 3-day desert trip, or Fes and the desert. You will not cover the north and south together without rushing.

Is 3 days enough for the Sahara?

Yes. Three days gives you two driving days, a night in the dunes and time to see Ait Benhaddou and the gorges without feeling pressed.

What is the best time to tour Morocco?

Spring and autumn are comfortable for most routes. The best time depends on the regions you visit.

Can I do a one-way trip?

Yes. Many of our routes begin in one city and end in another, such as Marrakech to Casablanca or Fes to Marrakech.
